Long before she set off any fireworks or even before she roared, Katy Perry was a lesser-known backup singer for the Christian heavy metal group P.O.D. In a newly resurfaced music video for the group’s song “Goodbye for Now,” Perry, now 30, makes a cameo belting out the emotional lyrics.

And it wasn’t a one-time-only thing. When the group performed on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno around the same time, the “Firework” singer also provided backup vocals.

Perry grew up with evangelical minister parents and has been very open about her religious upbringing. She even began her career as a gospel singer, using her given name, Katy Hudson.

“Sometimes when children grow up, their parents grow up,” she told Vanity Fair in 2011. “Mine grew up with me. We coexist. I don’t try to change them anymore, and I don’t think they try to change me. We agree to disagree. They’re excited about (my success).”
